European Goldfinch
Carduelis carduelis
Stillitsen eller stillidsen er en fugleart i finkefamilien. Fuglen yngler i Europa og en del af Asien.
Small, gaudy : a red face in a black-and-white head, sandy-brown body and black wings crossed by a broad bright yellow bar. The bill is finely pointed and compressed — tweezers for seed heads.
Plumage and variation
Male and female: The male’s red mask reaches past the eye; the female’s stops at it.
Juvenile: Juvenile lacks the head pattern entirely but is easily told by the yellow wing bar.
Voice
A silvery, tinkling twitter around a "tickeLIT" motif; the song a flowing stream of the same ringing notes.
Behaviour
A seed specialist hanging acrobatically in thistles, burdock and other composites, drawing seeds out with the pointed bill; in winter in small flocks, often on waste ground.
When and where
A fairly common breeding and passage bird (March–October) of open parkland, wood edges, avenues and gardens. Numbers fell through the 1900s with herbicide use, recovered from the late 1980s — and have slipped again since 2000.
