Field marks

Check an male’s outer-wing pattern: a dark wedge usually stands within pale feathers rather than joining a dark rear margin. The wedge widens towards the tip in older birds. The head and breast are particularly pale against the rest of the light pearl-grey . The patch is less striking than Hen’s. Its build sits between Hen and Montagu’s, with a narrower, sharper outer wing than Hen.

Can be confused with

  • Hen Harrier — Adult male Hen looks darker grey. Black reaches its wingtip and extends inwards along the rear margin, whereas Pallid typically has an isolated outer-wing wedge and an unmarked inner wing. Do not apply this adult comparison without caution to immature males.
  • Montagu's Harrier — In adult males, Montagu’s shows three tones above and a black band running along the secondaries. Pallid has uniformly pale upperparts and black typically restricted to the outer-wing wedge. Both have four fingers; this count cannot distinguish them.
