Bjergirisk er en lille spurvefugl i familien finker, der yngler i åbne områder med sparsom vegetation i forskellige dele af Nordeuropa, Mellemøsten og Centralasien, hvor den lever af frø fra urter. Det er en selskabelig fugl, der kan yngle i løse kolonier.

Field marks

The short pointed conical bill becomes yellow in winter. Build and size resemble Linnet, but the upperparts are darker. In males, the pink, almost unmarked is clear in flight and most strongly coloured in spring.

Can be confused with

  • Common Linnet — An unstreaked throat is the safest distinction from female and juvenile Linnets. Twite is more streaked and buff, without Linnet’s cinnamon-brown back. Its yellow winter bill also differs from Linnet’s grey bill.
  • Common Redpoll — Redpoll’s red forehead is absent in Twite, which has a buff face. A male Redpoll also has a pink breast; Twite’s bill is yellow in winter.

Voice

Series of "djøk-djøk-djøk" are occasionally interrupted by a thin prolonged "tveeiit". The song mixes rapid, slightly crackling trills with twittering.
