En vindrossel er en spurvefugl i drosselfamilien. I perioden maj-juli yngler vindroslen i et stort område fra Island i vest over Skotland, Nord- og Mellemskandinavien til Kolyma-floden i Sibirien i øst.

Field marks

Our smallest : a compact body, short tail and a relatively large head. A bold white stripe over the eye and along the lower edge of the cheek, grey-brown above and buff below, closely marked with dark streaks. At rest the wine-red flanks are plain to see, and in flight the wine-red underwing flashes through.

Can be confused with

  • Song Thrush — Song Thrush lacks the white supercilium and shows no wine-red on the flanks or underwing; its flight call is a sharp, short "tik" rather than the Redwing’s drawn-out, wailing whistle.
  • Fieldfare — Fieldfare has a grey head, pale grey rump and a black tail, and lacks both the Redwing’s white supercilium and its wine-red flanks.

Voice

The flight call is a keening, drawn-out "siip" that carries far through the dark and is mostly picked up on nocturnal passage in autumn. The song holds a few whistled notes falling in pitch, followed by a low twitter, and the alarm call is a piercing "tji-tik".
