Spurvehøgen er en relativt lille rovfugl. Den er fredet i Danmark.

Field marks

Short rounded wings and a long tail define the outline; the yellow legs are thin. underparts are barred. A brown-grey back and larger size indicate the female; males are smaller and blue-grey above.

Can be confused with

  • Northern Goshawk — Goshawk has a deeper chest, a longer outer wing and rounder tail corners. It is much bulkier, with the female reaching Buzzard size. Sparrowhawk has a squarer tail end and faster wingbeats.
  • Common Kestrel — Rounded wings and low attacks along hedges point to Sparrowhawk. Kestrel has pointed wings and hovers over open country; Sparrowhawk does not hover.

Voice

Silent much of the time. Occasionally gives a short series of yelping notes, "kek-kek-kek-kek".
