Herring Gull
Larus argentatus
Sølvmågen er en almindelig ynglefugl i Danmark og er den mest almindelige af de store måger og større end stormmågen og mindre end svartbagen. Det er også den største af de måger, der har sølvgrå ryg og sorte vingespidser.
Field marks
Large gull with a pale grey back and upperwing, a heavy yellow bill with a red spot on the lower mandible, and pink legs. White head (grey-streaked in winter), black wingtips with white "mirrors".
Can be confused with
- Common Gull — Common Gull is smaller and round-headed with a dark eye, yellow-green legs and a thin yellow bill with no (or only a faint) red spot.
- Lesser Black-backed Gull — Lesser Black-backed Gull has a dark slate-grey back and yellow legs, not pink.
- Great Black-backed Gull — Great Black-backed Gull is markedly larger with a blackish back and a very heavy bill.
