Field marks

The world’s largest, most powerful gull: white with a coal-black back and upperwings, a massive yellow bill with a red spot, and flesh-pink — not yellow — legs.

Can be confused with

  • Lesser Black-backed Gull — Lesser Black-backed Gull is far smaller and slimmer with yellow legs and a dark slate-grey — rarely truly black — mantle; the Great Black-backed is huge with flesh-pink legs and a genuinely black back.
