Great Black-backed Gull
Larus marinus
Svartbagen er en fugl, der lever langs de nordatlantiske kyster fra Nordamerika over Grønland og Island til Østersøen. Det er verdens største og kraftigste måge med en længde på 64-78 cm fra halespids til næbspids og vægt på 1.150-2.150 gram.
The world’s largest, most powerful gull: white with a coal-black back and upperwings, a massive yellow bill with a red spot, and flesh-pink — not yellow — legs.
Can be confused with
- Lesser Black-backed Gull — Lesser Black-backed Gull is far smaller and slimmer with yellow legs and a dark slate-grey — rarely truly black — mantle; the Great Black-backed is huge with flesh-pink legs and a genuinely black back.
Plumage and variation
Juvenile: Juvenile is chequered brown-black above with a black tail band, reaching adult dress only around its fourth year.
Voice
A deep barking "kaa-ga-ga", clearly deeper than the other gulls’.
Behaviour
An aggressive hunter, pirate and scavenger dominating all other gulls; besides fish it takes eggs, chicks, rodents, carrion and berries.
When and where
A Danish breeder with some of its biggest colonies on Læsø, Samsø and Saltholm; Danish birds are largely resident, while northern and eastern visitors pass and winter along the coasts.
