Eurasian Blackcap

Sleek, grey-olive with a light grey underside and one striking mark: the male’s black and the female’s rusty-brown cap.
Can be confused with
- Garden Warbler — Garden Warbler has no cap and no markings at all; its song resembles the Blackcap’s but is slightly lower and mellower, without the loud closing crescendo.
Plumage and variation
Male and female: The male a black cap and greyer body; the female a rusty-brown cap and slightly browner tones.
Juvenile: Juvenile resembles the female; young males show a darker brown cap than females.
Voice
The song is rich, musical fluting, often finishing in a loud, clear crescendo. The call a hard "tac-tac", like knocking stones.
Behaviour
A restless insect hunter in the foliage; the male sings with raised crown and fanned tail when holding territory.
When and where
Breeds in northern and temperate Europe and winters in southern Europe and North Africa; since the 1960s some Blackcaps have taken to wintering to the north-west instead, likely helped by garden feeding.
