Field marks

An orange breast and white are the main marks; the rump is especially visible in flight. The underparts are whitish with dark flank spots. The male’s head is black in summer but paler and greyish in winter. Throat and breast have rusty-yellow tones. Build and movements resemble Chaffinch.

Can be confused with

  • Common Chaffinch — Chaffinch’s green rump and pink breast separate it from Brambling’s white rump and orange breast. The rump is especially useful when the bird takes flight.

Voice

A hoarse drawn-out "kvææææ" is used in flight. Perched birds give shorter, hard metallic "kvæ-æk" or "tjæ-æv" notes.
