European Greenfinch
Chloris chloris
Grønirisken er en cirka 15 centimeter stor og kraftig finke, som er udbredt i Europa og dele af Mellemøsten og Nordafrika. I Danmark er grønirisken meget almindelig med en ynglebestand på omkring en halv million par.
Stocky of about 15 cm with a thick, conical bill. Olive-green with an obvious yellow flash in the wing and yellow at the sides of the tail — the wing flash is what you see first.
Plumage and variation
Male and female: The male is bright olive-green; the female duller with brown tones on the back.
Juvenile: Juvenile is streaked.
Voice
The song is trilling and twittering — canary-like — interspersed with a drawn-out wheeze. Often delivered in the characteristic zigzag flight.
Behaviour
The male has a conspicuous "butterfly" display flight in the breeding season, zigzagging like a bat. Forages in trees and bushes and on the ground — seeds of wild plants including rose hips — and is a regular at feeders for peanuts and sunflower seeds. In winter in small flocks, especially at feeding stations.
When and where
A very common Danish breeder with about half a million pairs. Breeds in park-like areas and woodland edges with conifers, and is especially numerous in suburban districts, summer-house areas and cemeteries.
