Grønirisken er en cirka 15 centimeter stor og kraftig finke, som er udbredt i Europa og dele af Mellemøsten og Nordafrika. I Danmark er grønirisken meget almindelig med en ynglebestand på omkring en halv million par.

Field marks

The thick conical bill and compact body separate this from slighter species. It is about 15 cm long and olive-green. Yellow appears in both the wing and the sides of the tail.

Can be confused with

  • Eurasian Siskin — Greenfinch has the bulkier body and heavier bill. Siskin looks more delicate and has conspicuous flank streaks; the male also shows black on its crown and chin.
  • House Sparrow — A grey-brown female or juvenile can resemble House Sparrow. Check the tail fork, yellow wing markings and yellow around the tail base: these remain visible even in streaked plumage.

Voice

Listen for a long nasal wheeze between twittering notes and trills. The song may accompany the male’s zigzag display flight.
