Fiskehejren er en fugl, der er udbredt i Europa, Asien og store dele af Afrika syd for Sahara. Den lever af småfisk, frøer og krebsdyr, som den fanger på lavt vand i søer og moser og ved havet langs kysterne.

Field marks

In flight, look for an S-folded neck and legs projecting behind the body, between bowed wings. On the ground, this large grey bird has long legs, a pale slender neck and a long yellow bill with a dagger tip. The eye is yellow. A black extends to the nape and two long plumes.

Can be confused with

  • White Stork — White Stork combines a red bill and legs with a white body and black wing feathers. Grey Heron has grey plumage and a yellow bill. In flight the stork extends its neck, while the heron folds it.
  • Great Egret — Great Egret is entirely white; Grey Heron is blue-grey. Both fold their necks in flight, so this posture does not separate them. Great Egret is no longer rare in Denmark.

Voice

The typical call is a loud, hoarse "fraaank". Territorial disputes can produce a sharp "schaah"; it also gives a subdued "gogogo".
