Ruff
Calidris pugnax

Brushane er en ca. 30 cm stor vadefugl, som tilhører sneppefuglene.
A medium-sized with a relatively small head, a short, slightly downcurved bill and long legs that vary from reddish through orange to yellowish and greyish. The breeding male is unmistakable, with a huge feather ruff and two ear tufts in shifting shades from white through rufous to black; outside the breeding season he looks far more like the mottled grey-brown female, only clearly bigger. Both sexes share very long tertial feathers that nearly cover the primaries and give the bird a hunched look in a headwind.
Can be confused with
- Common Redshank — Common Redshank has red legs, while the Ruff’s legs outside breeding dress run more orange; the Ruff also has a smaller head and a shorter, more downcurved bill relative to its body size.
Voice
This wader stays almost mute even at the display ground itself, though it can occasionally let out a short, low note the instant it takes off.
