Rødben er en vadefugl, der er ret almindelig som ynglefugl i Danmark. Den yngler desuden i størstedelen af Europa og Asien nord for Himalaya.

Field marks

Medium-sized, grey-brown streaked ; the marks are the bright red legs and the red, black-tipped bill. In flight a broad white trailing edge to the wing and a white wedge up the back.

Plumage and variation

Summer and winter: Breeding dress is warm brown and marbled; winter dress plainer grey-brown above and whitish below.

Voice

Noisy and vigilant; the call is a ringing, fluty "teu-hu-hu" that alarms the whole marsh.

Behaviour

The sentinel of meadows and mudflats: flushes early with loud warning calls. Forages in mud and shallows, the long bill reaching deeply buried prey; often nests densely on coastal meadows.

When and where

A fairly common breeder on coastal meadows and shores nationwide; also seen inland at wetlands.
