Tufted Duck
Aythya fuligula
Troldand er en fugl i familien egentlige andefugle. Den er 40-47 cm med et vingefang på 67-73 cm.
Small, compact . The drake black with cleanly set-off white flanks, a yellow eye, a blue-grey bill and a thin drooping nape crest; the female dark brown with paler flanks.
Can be confused with
- Greater Scaup — Greater Scaup lacks the crest entirely and the drake shows a grey — not black — back; the female Scaup’s white face patch is large and clean where the female Tufted’s is at most a hint.
Plumage and variation
Male and female: The female is dark brown with paler flanks and only a hint of crest.
Voice
The female gives a harsh growling "karr", mostly in flight; the drake is silent outside display, when he whistles a soft "wit-oo".
Behaviour
Feeds by diving, occasionally upending; gathers in big dense rafts on open water in winter.
When and where
A very common passage and winter visitor but a scarce breeder; the passage population is listed vulnerable and the breeding population near threatened.
