Common Whitethroat
Curruca communis
Tornsangeren er en 14 centimeter stor spurvefugl, der yngler i det meste af Europa og det vestlige Asien. Om vinteren trækker den sydpå til det tropiske Afrika, Arabien og Indien.
Slim, long-tailed with a gleaming white throat, chestnut fringes forming a rusty wing panel, and white outer tail feathers; the male has a grey head.
Can be confused with
- Lesser Whitethroat — Lesser Whitethroat is greyer with a dark cheek mask and no rusty wing panel, and its song is a dry, rattling run on one pitch — not the scratchy, dancing phrase.
Plumage and variation
Male and female: The male has a grey head and white throat; the female lacks the grey and is duller-throated.
Voice
The song is a short, eager, scratchy phrase of about a second — the Danish mnemonic "Vil I, vil I bare se!"; calls a "wed-wed" and a drawn-out rough "tschehr".
Behaviour
Keeps to low bushes and hedges, the male rising in a short dancing song flight. Nests low in scrub and brambles.
When and where
A common summer visitor to open-country scrub and hedges; winters in Africa south of the Sahara.
