European Crested Tit
Lophophanes cristatus
Topmejsen er en spurvefugl, der er almindelig som ynglefugl i nåleskove i Jylland og på Fyn. Den findes i øvrigt i store dele af Europa.
Small with a pointed, black-and-white speckled crest — wholly diagnostic. Whitish face outlined by a black "bridle" curving round the cheek, a black bib, plain brown upperparts and dirty-white underparts.
Can be confused with
- Coal Tit — Coal Tit has a black cap and a white nape-patch but no crest; the Crested Tit's pointed crest and bridled face separate it. Often together in conifers.
Plumage and variation
Male and female: Sexes alike — no visible difference in the field.
Juvenile: Juvenile has a shorter crest and a less crisply marked face than the adult.
Voice
A distinctive, rolling trill — a purring "tsi-tsi-tserrr" unlike any other tit.
Behaviour
Resident in conifers; forages on trunks and outer branches, hoards seeds and is usually seen in pairs. Very sedentary and rarely wanders.
When and where
A common breeder in coniferous woodland with c. 20,000–30,000 pairs; in Denmark it occurs only west of the Great Belt (Jutland and Funen), not on Zealand.
