Green Sandpiper
Tringa ochropus
Svaleklire er en sjælden yngletrækfugl i Danmark, men ret almindelig som trækgæst fra Fennoskandinavien. Svalekliren kan i flugten minde om en bysvale pga.
Medium-sized sandpiper with very dark, finely spotted upperparts contrasting sharply in flight with a white and a white tail carrying few, broad bars. The underwing is wholly black. Breast and throat dark-streaked with an abrupt border to the white belly; greenish legs and a short, indistinct .
Can be confused with
- Wood Sandpiper — Wood Sandpiper has grey underwings and far less contrast between upper- and underside, a longer supercilium and paler, more coarsely spotted upperparts; its legs are yellowish olive-green.
Plumage and variation
Juvenile: Juveniles have darker upperparts than adults with small golden-brown spots, denser dark streaking on the breast and a more uniformly dark throat and head — but the same supercilium and white eye-ring.
Voice
A ringing, whistled "tuit-vit-vit", most often heard as the bird flushes.
Behaviour
Nervous and inconspicuous; often noticed only when flushed, rising abruptly. Frequently bobs its rear end. One of the few waders to nest in trees — in abandoned thrush nests, usually in spruce, more rarely in woodpecker or squirrel nests.
When and where
A rare breeder but a fairly common passage migrant from Fennoscandia. Breeds in damp forest with small lakes and bogs; the Danish stronghold is Gribskov with more than 20 pairs. Spring passage runs from mid-March to mid-May; autumn passage begins with old females as early as the start of June and lasts to mid-November, the bulk of it in July and August.
