Marsh Tit
Poecile palustris
Small grey-brown with a glossy black cap, a small black bib and white cheeks — and an entirely plain wing. The explosive "pitchou" call is the surest mark.
Can be confused with
- Willow Tit — Willow Tit has a matt — not glossy — cap, a larger bib, a pale wing panel and a bull-necked look; voice settles it: the Marsh Tit’s explosive "pitchou" against the Willow Tit’s nasal "tchay-tchay".
Plumage and variation
Juvenile: Juvenile resembles the adults but duller; in adult dress from September.
Voice
The explosive "pitchou", often run on into "pitchou-bee-bee-bee"; the song a series of sharp notes gathering strength.
Behaviour
Neat and agile in the branches, readily hanging head-down — at feeders too.
When and where
A resident of damp deciduous woodland over most of the country, but scarce in west Jutland and absent from Bornholm.
