Pied black-and-white with big white shoulder patches and a scarlet vent; the male adds a red nape patch. Climbs propped on its tail and flies in deep bounds.
Plumage and variation
Male and female: The male has a red nape patch; the female none.
Juvenile: Juvenile shows a red crown — not nape — and a duller, pinker vent.
Voice
A sharp "kik", sometimes run into a rattling series; drums faster than any other woodpecker here, in short rolls, mostly in March and April.
Behaviour
Hitches up trunks braced on its tail and flies in deep bounds. Keeps regular "anvils" where cones and nuts are wedged and hacked open; also takes eggs and nestlings. Insects in summer, conifer seed in winter.
When and where
Our commonest woodpecker, resident and widespread except on the smallest wood-poor islands; in years when the northern conifer seed crop fails, many young northern birds visit.
