Eurasian Tree Sparrow
Passer montanus
Skovspurven er en spurv i ordenen af spurvefugle. Oprindeligt var den udbredt i Europa og Asien, men er siden indført til Nordamerika, Australien og New Zealand.
Sparrow with a chocolate-brown crown, a clean white cheek with a bold black spot and a white neck-collar; black throat and lores, streaked brown back and a white wingbar. Both sexes alike. Smaller and slimmer than House Sparrow.
Can be confused with
- House Sparrow — Male House Sparrow has a grey crown and white cheeks with no spot, and the sexes look different; Tree Sparrow has a brown crown, a black cheek-spot and identical sexes.
Plumage and variation
Male and female: Sexes alike — no visible difference, unlike House Sparrow.
Juvenile: Juvenile resembles the adult but is duller, with a less sharply defined cheek-spot and crown.
Voice
Chirping like House Sparrow but drier and higher-pitched; a characteristic hard "tek tek" in flight.
Behaviour
Shyer than House Sparrow and tied to woodland edges, larger gardens, parks and farmland rather than dense built-up areas. Nests in cavities.
When and where
A common resident throughout Denmark, almost as numerous as House Sparrow, but mostly in open country and woodland edges.
