Skovskaden er en stor kragefugl i ordenen af spurvefugle. Den yngler både i løv- og nåleskove i et stort område fra det vestlige Europa og det nordvestlige Afrika til den asiatiske østkyst og det sydøstlige Asien.

Field marks

Pinkish-brown with a black moustache from the bill, a pale streaked crown and a shining blue, black-barred wing panel. In flight the white gleams against the black tail.

Voice

A hoarse, rasping screech — like tearing cloth — used in alarm; also mimics raptors such as buzzards and goshawks so well only sight settles it.

Behaviour

Shy and mainly in woodland, though spreading into parks and gardens. Gathers and buries over a thousand acorns a year, making it the oak’s chief disperser.

When and where

A common resident with some 32,000 pairs (2011), most where conifers are plentiful — west and north Jutland, north Zealand and Bornholm. In some autumns large numbers invade from the north when the Scandinavian seed crop fails. Protected.
