Field marks

Grey-brown and heavily streaked above and on the breast, pale-bellied, with a small raisable crest. In flight white outer tail feathers and a narrow white trailing edge to the wing.

Plumage and variation

Male and female: Sexes alike; the male’s wings slightly broader.

Voice

The song is a clear, bubbling, unbroken stream, delivered in song-flight — rising, circling or hanging high over the field, often for minutes at a stretch.

Behaviour

Walks the ground for seeds and insects, crouching at danger. The nest is a shallow scrape in the open, away from tall growth.

When and where

At some 700,000 pairs (2011) Denmark’s third-commonest bird, spread across all open country — but down over 50 percent since 1976 and now near threatened on the Red List, chiefly from changed farming. Partially migratory; sings from earliest spring.
