Rågen er en kragefugl i ordenen af spurvefugle. Den har en længde på 45–48 cm.

Field marks

Black body with a blue-purple gloss; the mark is the pale, bare greyish-white patch at the base of the long, pointed grey-white bill in , plus a peaked and feathered "trousers" on the legs. A crow the size of a Hooded Crow. Gregarious.

Can be confused with

  • Carrion Crow — Carrion Crow is also all black but has a heavier, curved bill feathered right to the base (no bare patch), a rounded crown and is usually seen singly.
  • Hooded Crow — Hooded Crow has a grey body with black head, wings and tail — the Rook is all black.
  • Western Jackdaw — Jackdaw is clearly smaller with a pale eye and grey nape; the Rook is larger and all black with a long pale bill.

Voice

A flat, hoarse "kaah", less harsh than a crow's; from colonies a continuous din of grating calls.
