Short-eared Owl
Asio flammeus
Mosehornugle har en længde på 34-42 centimeter og et vingefang på 90-105 centimeter.
Medium-sized, slim owl with a round head and yellow eyes set in black on a pale face — a fierce, "angry" expression. Very short ear tufts, rarely visible. Buff-brown and streaked, with long wings; hunts low over open country, often by day.
Can be confused with
- Long-eared Owl — Long-eared Owl has orange eyes, long obvious ear tufts and a rufous face, is more nocturnal and keeps to woodland; the Short-eared Owl has yellow eyes, very short ear tufts, a pale face and hunts open country by day.
Plumage and variation
Male and female: Sexes alike — no clear difference in the field.
Voice
Usually silent here; on breeding grounds a muffled, repeated "boo-boo-boo" and wing-claps in display flight.
Behaviour
Hunts low and quartering over open country on long wings with soft, buoyant wingbeats; often perches on the ground or a low post. Active by day.
When and where
A very scarce breeder in Denmark; mainly a scarce-to-fairly-common passage and winter visitor to marshes, coastal meadows, heaths and open coasts.
