Eurasian Magpie
Pica pica
Unmistakable pied : black head, neck and breast with a green and violet metallic sheen, white belly and shoulder patches, and a very long, graduated black tail. White wing flashes show in flight.
Plumage and variation
Male and female: Sexes alike; the male only slightly larger.
Juvenile: Juvenile resembles the adults but lacks the gloss and has a clearly shorter tail.
Voice
A staccato chattering "shak-shak-shak", single or in series.
Behaviour
A resident in fixed pairs holding territory year-round; gathers in groups to roost communally in winter. Builds a large, domed stick nest, often near people. Omnivorous — grain, worms, scraps and, in the breeding season, the eggs and young of small birds.
When and where
A common breeding resident throughout Denmark, densest in towns; the population has more than doubled since the mid-1970s to about 180,000 pairs (2011) as hunting pressure fell.
