Halemejsen er en 14 centimeter lang spurvefugl, der er almindelig som standfugl i Danmark, bortset fra i Vest- og Nordjylland. Den er i øvrigt udbredt i det meste af resten Europa og Asien.

Field marks

Tiny and round of body — but with a very long, narrow tail making up about half the bird. Black, white and pink and a minute bill; the northern race has an all-white head.

Plumage and variation

Male and female: Sexes alike.

Juvenile: Juvenile shows a broad, diffuse dark eyestripe in place of the adult pattern.

Voice

Fine, high "pit" calls, a triple "eez-eez-eez" and a rattling "schnuur" — faster and louder when the flock crosses open ground or a bird gets separated.

Behaviour

Outside the breeding season always in small, tight flocks of around a dozen, working through the branches for small insects and spiders. The nest is a sphere with a side hole, lined with down and camouflaged with lichen.

When and where

A common resident in most of Denmark, though scarce towards the west and north. Keeps to deciduous and mixed woods, especially damp forest, and roams in flocks in winter.
