Gulspurven er en fugleart i familien af værlinger. Fuglen måler 16,5 cm.

Field marks

Slim, 16.5 cm bunting with a long tail. The male has a bright yellow head and yellow underparts, a heavily streaked brown back, a rufous and white outer tail feathers — the rufous rump is the mark that holds when the is otherwise worn.

Plumage and variation

Male and female: The female is less brightly coloured and more heavily streaked on crown, breast and flanks. The male gains more yellow with each moult after breeding.

Juvenile: Juvenile is much duller and far less yellow than the adults.

Voice

The song is a series of short introductory notes followed by a long drawn-out whistle — in Danish it is counted out as "En-to-tre-fir’-fem-seks-syyyyyyv". The call is a "zit", the alarm a "see" and the flight call a trilled "tirrr".

Behaviour

Sings from exposed perches along hedges and woodland edges, keeping at it well into July and August. Feeds on the ground; in winter in flocks that can occasionally number several hundred birds.

When and where

A common Danish breeder in open country with woods, scrub or hedgerows, though listed as vulnerable on the Danish Red List. Feeds on insects when breeding and on seeds in winter, especially grain spillage.
