Gærdesmutten er en fugleart i gærdesmuttefamilien. Den måler 9,5-12 centimeter og er med sine 8-13 gram Danmarks næstmindste fugl efter fuglekongen.

Field marks

Very small, 9–12 cm, rufous brown above and greyer below with indistinct darker barring. The mark is the short tail, almost always held cocked upright; plus a cream-buff and a dark brown bill.

Plumage and variation

Male and female: Sexes alike.

Juvenile: Juvenile shows less distinct barring and more mottled underparts.

Voice

The call is a sharp, repeated "tic-tic-tic" running into an emphatic churr when the bird is agitated. The song is a gushing burst of clear, shrill, emphatic music with tinkling trills — weight for weight ten times louder than a cockerel — and is heard year-round.

Behaviour

Mouse-like: forages close to the ground in the thickest cover with quick, jerky movements, and flies on tiny round wings that whirr. The male builds several domed "cock nests" with a side entrance within the territory, and the female chooses among them. Roosts in small groups with other wrens in winter.

When and where

A very common Danish breeder with 300,000–500,000 pairs (2000). Danish birds are mainly resident, joined in winter by visitors from Scandinavia. Because it feeds on insects all year, the population drops noticeably after long spells of frost.
