Fasanen er den største, vildtlevende hønsefugl i Danmark og findes i flere varianter, hvoraf ringfasanen er den hyppigst forekommende.

Field marks

Large with a very long, pointed tail. The male is coppery and golden with a dark green metallic head, red facial skin and often a white neck-ring; the female is mottled buff-brown with dark spots.

Can be confused with

  • Grey Partridge — Grey Partridge is much smaller and round with a short rufous tail and an orange face — not the pheasant's long, pointed tail.

Plumage and variation

Male and female: Marked sexual difference: the male gaudy with a metallic head, the female plainly mottled brown.

Behaviour

Walks and runs on the ground in open country with cover; flushes abruptly and noisily and glides off on stiff wings.

When and where

A common resident throughout Denmark in farmland, hedgerows and reedbeds; the population is supplemented by released birds.
