Field marks

Medium-sized, cryptically camouflaged with a disproportionately long, straight bill, pale lengthwise stripes on head and back and barred flanks.

Can be confused with

  • Jack Snipe — Jack Snipe is smaller with a much shorter bill and flushes silently and only briefly — it lacks the Common Snipe's very long bill.

Voice

On flushing, a hoarse, explosive "kætsch"; in display flight a mechanical "drumming" from the outer tail feathers.

Behaviour

Sits tight in low vegetation and flushes abruptly in a zig-zagging escape; probes soft mud with the long bill.

When and where

A fairly common breeder on wet meadows and bogs and a very common passage migrant in Denmark.
