European Pied Flycatcher
Ficedula hypoleuca

Den brogede fluesnapper er en op mod 13 centimeter lang fluesnapper i ordenen af spurvefugle. Den yngler i det meste af Europa og det vestlige Asien og overvintrer hovedsageligt i det vestlige Afrika.
A small, round-bodied, short-tailed songbird, smaller than a house sparrow, that hunts flying insects in short sallies from a fixed lookout. The breeding male is sharply patterned in sooty or dark grey and white, carrying a bold flash of white across the wing, pale edges to the black tail and a small white spot on the forehead. The female is a subdued brown version of the male, with less white in the wing and no white forehead spot.
Can be confused with
- Spotted Flycatcher — Spotted Flycatcher is a uniform ash-grey bird with no forehead spot or black-and-white pattern, and its pale wing bar is far fainter than the white wing patch on a female Pied Flycatcher; it also arrives later in spring and hunts more persistently from the air.
- Red-breasted Flycatcher — Red-breasted Flycatcher is distinctly smaller, closer to the size of a Willow Warbler, and shows white outer tail feathers in every plumage, often flashed by cocking the tail; older males also show an orange-red throat, something the Pied Flycatcher never has.
Voice
The song is a clear-ringing phrase with a touch of melancholy, built from several different themes that follow one another in a changing order, with sudden jumps in tempo and pitch. The call rings out sharp and clear, a "pvitt", often followed by a smacking "tett".
