Garganey
Spatula querquedula

Atlingand er en af de mindste danske ænder. Navnet atling kommer fra jysk og betyder efternøler, hvilket hentyder til, at man tidligere mente, at Atlinganden kom fra det sidste æg i gråandens kuld på grund af dens størrelse.
A small , only a shade bigger than its smallest relative. The drake shows a purple-brown head with a broad white stripe running from eye to nape, a dark brown breast and pale grey flanks; seen in flight, the pale belly stands out sharply against the dark breast. The female looks far more subdued, with a white throat, a dark and a short, pale eyebrow stripe.
Can be confused with
- Eurasian Teal — Eurasian Teal is smaller and more compact, sitting tightly on the water, with a blackish-green speculum; the female Garganey is best told by her paler, more clearly patterned face and her longer, straighter bill.
- Northern Shoveler — Northern Shoveler has a long, spoon-shaped bill that broadens sharply toward the tip; at a distance in flight the females of the two can still look alike, and bill shape is then the surest thing to go by.
Voice
The drake’s call, given when disturbed or during display, is a dry, rattling sound, almost like a fingernail dragged across the teeth of a comb; the female is far quieter.
